Pregnancy in Summer

So…..it was 104 degrees this weekend. For like 4 days in a row. I know all the california people are rolling their eyes but I didn’t move to Maine to swelter in 104 degree heat in MAY. Speaking of May, it’s now June – which means I’m having a baby next month. Still can’t quite get over that.

Anyway, to beat the heat this weekend, instead of our usual tactics (go to the lake, turn on the ceiling fan, walk around naked), we went straight to Lowe’s and bought an AC. Ceiling fans just don’t cut it when you’re 8 months pregnant and packing almost 25 pounds more than normal. The AC has been so amazing. I can’t believe we didn’t get one sooner. It’s like a little slice of heaven.

In addition to the AC, we ALSO turned on the ceiling fan, walked around naked and went to the lake (not all at the same time). It was SO hot that I actually went in the freezing cold lake water for almost 45 minutes, on a float – belly hanging out all over the place. People kept telling me it was great that I was confident enough to wear a bikini pregnant – I appreciate the compliment, but the reality is I’m just too cheap to buy a maternity bathing suit that I will only wear for 7 or so weeks. Plus, these may be the last few weekends I can wear a bikini for who knows how long until I get back into shape post-pregnancy. Gotta take advantage!

In other news, my coworkers threw me a surprise baby shower last Friday which was so nice! I don’t think I’ve ever been successfully surprised by a party before so it was so much fun! It was also a blast going through all the sweet gifts we got, including a diaper bag, swaddle blankets, tons of clothes, pacifiers, etc. – and even a homemade baby blanket which is so adorable and just so sweet. We are feeling very loved this week 🙂

I also had a doctor’s appointment yesterday morning and everything was normal. Apparently me (and baby) are going through another “growth spurt” this month, as I gained 3 pounds in 2 weeks. Lovely. Baby is head down though, and has started dropping into my pelvis – which means she’s getting ready!! Hopefully she stays that way so we can have a (relatively) uncomplicated (hopefully natural) birth. Fingers crossed!! In addition to the doctor’s appointment, Dan and I also had our first birthing class last night – which was highly amusing. The instructor was great (very supportive and informative about unmedicated births) but the other people in the class were seriously out of a movie or something. There was the couple that you couldn’t tell which one was the woman (you couldn’t tell which one of them was pregnant either), the couple that kissed each other and rubbed each other’s backs the entire class (and cried during the birthing video), the couple that knew everything because they “attended a friend’s birth,” and the single girl who hasn’t decided if she should keep or adopt the baby. There was also one relatively normal seeming couple, who sat near us – maybe because we seemed normal also – or maybe because they were the only seats left. Or maybe because Dan showed up in a Harley Davidson tee with a huge rip in the back and a stain down the front, and a dirty sock fell out of the blanket we were asked to bring for practicing labor comfort techniques. HA.

Lastly, I started my new job today. I am now an “Assistant Account Executive and Content Specialist.” I moved upstairs to account services, and got my new desk all set up.  It’s a little overwhelming but mostly exciting and I’m hoping I can get everything under control in time to leave for 3 months 🙂
